Your Potential Employer Disqualified You Because Your Credit Sucks
A fan from our Facebook page, asked the following situation, and explained her situation:
How do I avoid jobs that require credit check? I had a phone call last week and when we got to the credit check thing I didn't make the cut. Why are they so adamant about the credit check? What purpose does it have?
I applied online with a staffing agency for a data entry position and got the calls and was interviewed over the phone. They asked about the credit check, I told them I don't know but didn't think it was that bad. I did told them I got bills to pays. They said that it has to be clean or something I didn't get exactly what they said. They apologized and wish me luck. That was the end of it.
Companies are using non-traditional ways to exclude jobseekers, not necessarily to include jobseekers. Credit reports are one way to quick shrink the explosion of candidates that apply for one job. It’s not the only reason, but it’s one that’s hard to swallow if you haven’t worked in months.
If the above is happening to you, act immediately. Not in panic, but in resolution:
- Go to www.annualcreditreport.com and get your free credit report. Consider that it may not have anything to do with your bill payment habits. Old addresses and jobs could cause credibility problems. Old bills could also wreck your chances, but the first thing you have to do is check.
- Are you doing something about your history? No contact with creditors worsen your history, and chances to settle conveniently. Behavior is the main issue that an employer will notice immediately, and ultimately, disqualify you from the race. You will birth suspicion if you open credit cards and spend the limit, and display a pattern of accruing debt.
- You can correct and improve your within 30-60 days, especially if you are prepared to write letters, talk to creditors for an extensive amount of time.
- Every time you sign off on a background check, there should also be a disclosure agreement. DON’T SIGN IF THERE IS NOT A PRIVACY AGREEMENT! Protect yourself and know your rights.

Great topic. Not many people realize employers are routinely conducted credit checks. The best practice is to monitor your credit reports and scores. In this era of massive job layoffs, foreclosures and other issues - more potential applicants may find they are disqualified for jobs because of poor credit.

Thanks Anita. It's an intangible that people cannot control, although it may exclude really good candidates. Unfortunately, even your lifestyle is under scrutiny.
